I create abstractions of figures and the spaces they occupy. I am trained as a painter but in recent years my production has greatly diversified. I carve busts from polystyrene foam to serve as a visual reference for my paintings. It is important for me to describe the illusion of light and form through colour but I do not limit myself to this approach. Through additions of fiber constructions and wooden display furniture these busts become components in sculptural installations.

I am most satisfied when my work embodies a studied carelessness, a considered clumsiness. This simultaneous embrace and distrust of virtuosity in artmaking creates a sort of Frankenstein’s monster, a sympathetic brute that exists to inspire awe and pity in those who behold it. I believe it is in this earnest catastrophe that humour can be found. Contemporary commedia dell’arte director Antonio Fava
describes this particular sort of failure: “Though he creates disasters, he does not do so maliciously but rather with the best of intentions of a proud and honest worker.”

My proposed commission approach is to have a drink with you. I want to exchange ideas, stories, tastes, and biases in a way that takes its time and goes off on tangents. This can be accomplished with or without a drink, mind you. My agenda here is to create an indirect path to a commission, one that
arrives at a starting point for my work that both parties find interesting and challenging. This is more risky but more fun. All that said, I’m a researcher and I look for outside information to help me create projects. I want to be guided, focused, and even limited by a patron so long as they allow me the freedom to authentically experiment, wander, **** up, and discover a result.
