  • July 1 – September 30, 2016
  • Chicago, IL

Shonna Pryor’s practice is a multidisciplinary one which employs food theory and concepts as a vehicle to explore intersections of identity, culture, and politics. She is interested in the various ways food functions not only as a gustatory experience, but as a lens through which to examine her own memory experience, sociopolitical tensions, and art making in reflecting broader cultural narratives. Her materials and processes have included painting, installation, video, and art fair intervention performance. In addition to preparing for an upcoming group exhibition at HPAC, she will be focusing her residency on exploring various conceptual iterations of hip-hop culture that engage the food recipe through painting, sound, and participatory processes.

Pryor currently teaches at The School of the Art Institute of Chicago where she earned an MFA from the Painting and Drawing department, and holds a BFA in Fiber from The College for Creative Studies, Detroit. She is a recipient of the Archibald Motley Jr. Award and has exhibited locally and nationally including Woman Made Gallery, Chicago; G R N’Namdi Gallery, Detroit; and Abrazo Interno Gallery, New York, among others.
