Yane Calovski & Hristina Ivanoska

Since 2000, Calovski and Ivanoska collaborations have animated multilayered conceptual possibilities inspired by accumulated knowledge, intuitive references, historical and present day political concepts.

Their ideas derive from their interest in architecture, literature, theory, art history, as well as socio-political identification in current post-transitional society. Their projects have been presented at a various international contexts and institutions including Museum of Contemporary Art, Zagreb (2017), Apoteka Gallery, Vodnjan, Croatia (2017), Zhejiang Art Museum, China (2017), Silesian Museum, Katowice (2017), Guangdong Museum of Art, China (2017), 56th International Venice Biennial – Pavilion of the Republic of Macedonia (2015), Pera Museum, Istanbul (2016), Zona Sztuki Aktualnej / SZCZECIN, Poland (2016), Museum of Contemporary Art, Belgrade (2016), Art Rooms, Kyrenia, Cyprus (2015), Artinternational, Istanbul (2015), Malmö Konstmuseum, Sweden (2015), City Art Gallery Ljubljana (2015), Staatliche Kunsthalle Baden-Baden (2014), HDLU – Croatian Association of Artists, Zagreb (2009), Zak/Branicka Gallery, Berlin (2016, 2008), Kronika Gallery, Bytom, Poland (2007), and other venues. In 2004 they co-founded the art and curatorial research platform “press to exit project space” in Skopje. Calovski and Ivanoska has been an artist-in-residence at the Sculpture Space, Utica, New York (2016) and The Corporation of Yaddo, Saratoga Springs, New York (2001).

Yane Calovski (1973, Skopje) studied Sculpture at the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts (1992-96) and the “‘confluence’ of sculpture, literature and architecture via drawing processes” at Bennington College (B.A., 1997). Calovski was a Researcher at the Jan Van Eyck Academy (2002-04) and the CCA Kitakyushu (1999-00), and has received an ORTung Fellowship (2012), Allians Kulturstiftung Award (2004) and Pew Fellowship in the Arts (2001), among other recognitions. His graduate work was completed in ‘Culture and Media Production’ from Linköpings Universitet in Sweden (2010). He is currently a doctoral candidate at the Euro-Balkan Institute of Social Sciences and Humanities in Skopje. Calovski’s context-oriented installations, publications, and curatorial projects, combine modernist archives concerned with architecture with empirical ideas situated in the site-specificity of different cultural, social and political geographies. He has exhibited, screened and published internationally including Bunkier Sztuki Gallery of Modern Art in Krakow, Bauhaus Foundation Dessau, Kunsthalle Baden-Baden, Kunsthalle Bregenz, Akbank Art Center, Tate Britain, European Kunsthalle, The Nederland Media Art Institute, Konshallen Brandts, Baltic Art Center, Contemporary Art Center Vilnius, The Drawing Center – New York, and others venues. He has exhibited at Macedonian Pavilion at the 56th Venice Biennial (with Hristina Ivanoska, 2015), the Helsinki Photography Biennial 2014, D-0 ARK Underground 2012, Manifesta 7 (2008) and Manifesta 3 (2000). In 2012 the Zorlu Center Art Collection published Yane Calovski: OBJE’CT, a monograph edited by Basak Senova. His work has been presented at FRIEZE London, Art Basel, Vienna Art Fair and Istanbul Contemporary.

Hristina Ivanoska (1974, Skopje) completed her B.F.A. (1997) and M.F.A. (2013) at the Faculty of Fine Arts in Skopje. Currently she is a PhD-in-Practice candidate at the Academy of Fine Arts Vienna. Ivanoska works with objects, texts, drawing, video, performance and installation, often interdisciplinary and as a critical investigation into the experience of present-day social and political systems and their relationship to theory and history.
