Jelena Juresa works primarily with photography and video and conducts visual research on identity, politics of memory and oblivion and the representational limits of photographic image. The focus of her work is the relationship between the observer and the observed within the confines of the “image,” and what it does and does not convey. Juresa is currently a PhD researcher at Ghent University, Faculty of Arts and Philosophy, Research centre S:PAM (Studies in Performing Arts & Media) and KASK Conservatorium she is focusing on the construction of new state identities in Austria after the Anschluss and fifty years later in the Republic of Srpska (Bosnia and Herzegovina) and the relations this practice have to atrocities, responsibility and silence.

RESIDENCY PROJECT
Juresa used the history of Chicago and it’s public sculpture as a springboard for conversation and exploration. During the eight week residency, Jane Addams emerged as a central figure to Juresa’s research-based practice. This historical figure provided connections to public memorials, politics of memory and identity, all present through her enduring legacy in our contemporary city. While in residence, Juresa visited exhibitions, completed studio visits, and held an artist conversation with Melissa Potter on October 24th, 2015. Juresa hopes to continue to develop and use her research towards the creation of a new video installation.
