Ground Floor (Gallery 1)
Ground Floor brings together work by Chicago’s most promising emerging talent from recent MFA Graduate Programs at UIC, University of Chicago, School of the Art Institute, Columbia, and Northwestern to offer a single destination to discover diverse artists whose work demands to be seen and supported. Ground Floor—so named because it provides a crucial platform for young artists and fills the entire lower level of the Art Center—is an ongoing biennial project.
Joseribierto: BoboDeco (Gallery 5)
Drawing inspiration from both 20th century modern painting and neighborhood aesthetics, paintings by Joseriberto are composed of vibrant, abstract representations of Miami’s landscape and architecture, family heirlooms, and symbolic objects traditionally found in Afro-Caribbean homes. He reinterprets a host of Miami’s palm varieties and decorative fences into colorful patterns that he hand-prints onto textiles and sews into large-scale paintings. Working with materials and processes that are charged with cultural meaning, Joseriberto engages with his and his family’s experience of working in laundromats during much of his youth. Through his artistic practice, Perez imbues familiar movements with new meaning. Folding, dyeing, sewing, layering, and washing become exercises in questioning relationships between images, histories, traditions, and places.
Regarding the Missing Objects (Kanter Family Foundation Gallery)
Guest curated by the art historian and critic, Ruslana Lichtzier, the exhibition Regarding the Missing Objects presents artworks by eight contemporary artists that draw attention to the schism between artistic knowledge production and institutional power while spotlighting the hidden force of censorship in forming both aspects. The featured artists respond to a Jewish institutional collection and archive to which they have gained selective access to, inviting us to question how accessible are museums and archives? The artists include William J. O’Brien, Dana Carter, Tirtza Even, Ben Segal, Julia Klein, Maggie Taft, Jaclyn Mednicov, and Elana Adler.
Dynamic Surfaces: Alternative Print Workshop with Teaching Artist: Maria Burundarena
1-4pm
Participants will use paper as an empty canvas to make vibrant and unique pattern compositions in response to the Joseriberto Perez Exhibition, BoboDeco. Through different print media techniques and alternative surface interventions, they will discover how to make stamps with discarded and found materials that surround us to create repetitive modules and free gestures that could be easily reproduced. They will use dying techniques to create atmospheres and backgrounds while using collages to layer and reorganize our compositions. Participants will leave this workshop with a new series of prints and a new set of ideas for using everyday materials to print and make unique surface transformations.
