Come see the new installation at booth #176 including a temporary new wall painting by 2016 . Jackman Goldwasser Resident Artist, Eric J. Garcia and material intervention by current Center Program artist Frances Lightbound. This special project is curated by Hyde Park’s Residency & Public Programs Manager, Ariel Gentalen.

These talented artists seek to call attention to overlooked issues–often right under our feet. Working together to create a vibrant installation that bridges Garcia’s figurative murals with Lightbound’s conceptual sculpture, this collaboration seeks to disrupt the dominant understanding of American history that is often whitewashed, flattened, and contrary from known reality. Garcia’s and Lightbound’s work is able to generate understandings for the viewer, of how past events are related to our lives.

This year, EXPO is celebrating the city’s art and design legacy with special programming in alignment with Art Design Chicago.  Now entering its seventh edition, EXPO CHICAGO presents artwork from more than 3,000 artists from around the world, and a dynamic roster of programming. We are excited to participate in this year’s expo!

Expo 2018 - Frances Lightbound & Eric J. Garcia

About the Artists

Born in Sheffield (UK) and based in Chicago since 2014, Frances Lightbound works between sculpture, installation and printmaking to pose questions around property, boundaries and access in the context of built environments. Lightbound’s work has been exhibited in venues in the US and UK, with recent and upcoming exhibitions including 6018|North (Chicago, IL), 68projects (Berlin), Blue Star Contemporary (San Antonio, TX), DEMO Project (Springfield, IL), Heaven Gallery, Chicago Artists’ Coalition and EXPO Chicago (Chicago, IL). She has participated in residencies at Ox-Bow School of Art, Chicago Artists’ Coalition, and the Studio Pavilion (Glasgow, UK). Lightbound earned an MFA from the School of the Art Institute of Chicago and a BA (Hons) from Glasgow School of Art, and is a 2017 Visual Arts Fellow of the Luminarts Cultural Foundation.

Known for mixing history and culture with contemporary politics, Eric J. Garcia always tries to create art that is much more than just aesthetics.  Garcia has exhibited nationally to include such institutions like San Francisco’s Museum of Modern Art, Museum of Latin American Art, and the Museum of Contemporary Art Detroit.  Received his BFA with a minor in Chicano studies from the University of New Mexico, Garcia went on to completed his MFA from the School of the Art Institute of Chicago. A versatile artist working in an assortment of media, from hand-printed posters, to larger than life murals, to his controversial political cartoons, they all have a common goal of educating and challenging.
