Residency for Chicago Artists

About the Programs:

The Jackman Goldwasser Residency at Hyde Park Art Center connects artists deeply with their own practice in the context of our vibrant, multifaceted community. Each year, our program invites international, national, and Chicago artists and curators to complement their mode of production with increased attention towards reflection, reconnection, and research to spark new ideas and considerations of local and global art practices.

Radicle Studio Residency, Year-Long Residency for Chicago Artists

This year, the Art Center seeks to award three Radicle Studio artists with yearlong residencies. The radicle is the first part of a seedling to burst forth from a seed, rooting itself deeply into the earth. The goal of these residencies is to be rooted for a year at the Art Center through high-quality, free studio space for Chicago artists to make work and research new projects, access to the Art Center’s broad international network of artists and resources, connection with a dynamic public, and learn about and engage with the Art Center’s ongoing efforts to dismantle systemic racism in our field.

The program provides the following:

  • A private locked studio at the Art Center (between 300 – 600 square feet) with 24 hour access
  • Staff support and professional development opportunities, including: studio visits with local and visiting curators and collectors, grant writing assistance, and exhibition opportunities
  • Opportunities to connect with other artists and members of the broader cultural community through formal and informal introductions
  • Participation in our monthly Center Sunday series, community gatherings, exhibition openings, and other Art Center events
  • One free class at the Art Center during the residency, including painting, printmaking, ceramics, photography, textile, and others
  • A $1500 stipend

Flex Residency, Seasonal Residencies for Chicago Artists

The Art Center seeks to invite three Flex Studio Residents to participate in three month-long project-based residencies. Flex residents receive free studio space to make work and develop new projects. They receive access to the Art Center’s broad network of artists and resources, and connect with the Art Center’s staff and dynamic community.

  • Participation in our monthly Center Sunday series, community gatherings, exhibition openings, and other Art Center events.
  • A $300 transportation stipend

The Jackman Goldwasser Residency is curated based on an artist’s ideas and interest to think critically about their practice and its relationship to notions of site, community, geography, and a demonstrated commitment to dismantling inequities through their work. Also of consideration is artists’ need and the impact this residency will have on their career. The Residency supports both local and visiting artists and curators, and by linking practitioners from different communities, the program aims to galvanize an international network of artists, curators, academics, arts administrators, educators, practitioners, and researchers who we invite to consider themselves peers and colleagues participating in a conversation that transcends national, cultural, and political boundaries.
