The Jackman Goldwasser Residency at the Hyde Park Art Center grows international and local networks by inviting artists and curators from around the world for residencies where they live and work alongside Chicago-based artists, in our studios on site and within the dynamic Hyde Park community.
Collaborative exchanges have become an integral part of the Jackman Goldwasser Residency program. We’re eager to partner with community based arts institutions to build a network that is informed by artists invested in their communities, and to create a model that supports artists to consider geographies and communities new to them.
CURRENT MODELS
These endeavors aim to expand how a locally-focused residency can operate, but also create and grow an international community for Chicago artists around the globe. There are many ways there exchanges can look.
Currently we work within a trio of models:
Artist Exchanges: Artists from two cities participate in reciprocal residency
Grant Based: Larger, long term model with a final exhibition in both locations
Curatorial: Recommendations for short-term project from hive mind curators.

OUR PARTNERSHIPS
Centre régional de la photographie Nord—Pas-de-Calais (CRP)
Hyde Park Art Center launches “Resilient Images,” a new international project in collaboration with the Centre régional de la photographie Nord—Pas-de-Calais (CRP) located in the North of France. This collaboration marks the first between CRP and Hyde Park Art Center, who was named a 2016 grantee of the John D. and Catherine T. MacArthur Foundation’s International Connections Fund.

2:2:2 Exchange with Project Row Houses
In 2015, Hyde Park Art Center and Houston’s Project Row Houses launch a first-time collaboration titled the 2:2:2 Exchange, which features an interchange between two artists, one based in Houston, TX, and one based in Chicago, IL.
This collaboration features two artists, two organizations and two cities. It exposes artists already working with socially engaged, site-specific practices to new communities with the goal of expanding their artistic practice in the context of a city new to them. Similarly sized, both Houston and Chicago provide a dynamic urban space, rich with artistic engagement. Through this residency exchange, Project Row Houses and Hyde Park Art Center aim to provide an opportunity for artists to research localized ways of thinking and creating in a different city to enhance their practices at home.

Chicago via Tel Aviv, in Partnership with ARTPORT
Hyde Park Art Center is pleased to announce a new residency exchange, Chicago via Tel Aviv, in partnership with ARTPORT, a contemporary art center focused on supporting emerging artists and promoting alternative artistic dialogue in Tel Aviv. Israeli artist Ronit Porat joins the residency this Fall (September-November), while Marissa Lee Benedict travels to Tel Aviv this summer (June-July).

Migration of the Imaginary, in Partnership with FRISE
Migration of the Imaginary is a new residency exchange between two cities: Hamburg, Germany and Chicago, two residency programs: FRISE and Hyde Park Art Center, and two artists: Dorothea Carl and Aram Han Sifuentes.
This exchange considers the lived realities for immigrant, refugee and other new communities in these cities. The goal of the exchange is to invite artists working deeply in their own local communities to expand their work and processes into new ones, demonstrate their perspectives, raise new questions, and share effective strategies they are employing in this time of crisis.
Given the large number of new Americans and new Germans living legally in both countries, despite recent policies in both nations limiting these legal channels, this exchange considers how new communities are being connected and integrated into mainstream society. What strategies are artist using to build cultural bridges and expand access to essential resources?
Migration of the Imaginary provides an opportunity across two geographies to consider how artists have been effective leaders in this charge. Through immersive residencies, we aim to support artists currently engaged in questions related to the lived impact of current immigration policies to develop more nuanced productive pathways forward.
