Artist

Jacqueline Surdell

I am an interdisciplinary artist with a focus in fiber. Primarily, I use rope, and other industrial textile materials, to consider painting histories through the lens of Craft and Material Culture. My current body of work abstracts and questions ideas of landscape painting, specifically, as a flat, static, painted object. I am drawn to the ways landscape offers perspective on our current world through the lens of the past — suggesting alternative connections between historical memory and our present day.

Recent solo and 3-person exhibitions include Patricia Sweetow Gallery, San Francisco, UW Parkside, Kenosha, Apparatus Projects, Chicago, and Chicago Artists’s Coalition. Group exhibitions include Kunsthal KadE, Netherlands, Portrait Society Gallery, Milwaukee, WI, South Bend Museum of Art, South Bend, IN, Western Exhibitions, Chicago, and Antenna, New Orleans.

Upcoming exhibitions include Library Street Collective, Detroit and Devening Projects, Chicago, IL
