Nuria Montiel

  • Fall 2014
  • Visiting from Mexico City

Mexico City-based artist Nuria Montiel makes collective and participatory art in public spaces using micro-political and self-organized actions to challenge and transform the fabric of our reality. Montiel organizes workshops, interventions and events that involve print and popular culture, employ written language and text, printmaking, popular dance, and performance in public space to this end.

Montiel studied the Escuela Nacional de Artes Plásticas (ENAP-UNAM) and continued her studies in contemporary art at Soma, an artist organization dedicated to pedagogy based in Mexico City. Last year, she presented “¡Sacúdete!/shake it out!” at Museum Sala de Arte Público Siqueiros, a performance which stresses the aesthetic relationship between social upheavals and body movements. In 2012 she was artist-in-residence at the International Studio and Curatorial Program in New York City. Since 2007 until 2010 she worked collectively with JOKUS and the Medios Múltiples Seminar. She built La Imprenta Móvil, a device that works in the streets by collaborating with pedestrians to use paper to express thoughts, demands and beliefs.

Montiel’s work has been presented in group exhibitions, including Panamericana curated by Jens Hoffman at Galería Kurimanzutto, Jardín de Academus curated by José Miguel Gonzáles Casanova at Museo Universitario de Arte Contemporáneo in México, Ésto no es un museo, artefactos móviles al acecho at AcVic Barcelona, The New York Art Book Fair 2012 at MoMA PS1 NYC and at Kunstverein Munchen in Mexico. In 2010 she co-founded La Galería de Comercio with artist Abraham Cruzvillegas, a non-profit initiative that presents public art projects on the street every month. Montiel plans to identify new possible collaborators during her residency and expand existing projects like La Galería de Comercio during her time at Hyde Park Art Center and in Chicago.
